If it were easy, everyone would do it
People will look at these photos and see banners.
A campaign brought to life at Mansion House.
What they won't see is everything that had to happen before the photos could be taken.
Behind these banners were months of conversations, approvals, revisions, emails, and problem-solving. There were discussions about highways permissions, insurance, traffic management, vehicle access, risk assessments, and countless details that most people will never think about when looking at a finished photograph.
At various points, things were approved, then paused, then approved again with additional requirements attached.
Most projects have complexities that remain invisible once the final result is delivered. This project more than most. Mansion House is a Grade I listed building in the heart of the City of London. An extraordinary place to work, but not somewhere where you simply decide to put something up and get on with it.
And that's what strikes me most.
We spend a lot of time admiring outcomes. The campaign, the event, the building, the product launch, the transformation.
What we rarely see are the conversations, compromises and problem-solving that make those outcomes possible.
By the time we see the finished result, most of that work has become invisible.
Perhaps that's the irony of successful projects. The smoother the outcome appears, the easier it is to underestimate what it took to get there.
What impressed me most throughout this project was not the banners themselves.
It was the determination of everyone involved to find a way through.
People asked questions, adapted plans, worked together and kept going. Not because it was easy, but because they believed it was worth doing.
The photos capture the outcome. They don't capture the effort behind it.
In many ways, these banners are a celebration of everyone who made them happen.
Because most worthwhile things look simple once they are finished.
The hard part is everything that happens before that.
